Service Learning

It was Martin Luther King Jr who said that “Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve… You only need a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love.”

One of the pillars of purpose of Hillcrest is Service, which encapsulates the desire to see students live and learn in ways that has them live not for their own self-interest but for the benefit of others. Not only do we want all our students to flourish but for them to help in seeing their neighbours, both local and global, flourish as well.  Hence our emphasis on “Service Learning.”

Service Learning at Hillcrest Secondary incorporates everything from our Senate Leadership team raising funds for a national charity to participating in a mission trip to East Timor or Cambodia; from helping in a local foodbank to supporting one of our six sponsored children overseas.

A lot of what we focus on at Secondary levels is both gaining an understanding of and respect toward how others live (e.g. Living in an Aboriginal community in The Northern Territory) and in practical ways contributing to the lives of others (e.g. participation in the World Vision 40 Hour Famine).
