Hillcrest is committed to encouraging young people to develop a willingness to contribute to, and sacrificially serve, their College and community under the leadership of God. Leadership is developed through learning, guidance, role modelling and opportunity. All student leadership positions will have a strong interaction with the student body and will work directly with the Head of Schools, Year Level Coordinators and other staff members who have responsibility for specific functions within the College. Through a wide range of College opportunities such as Open Days, assemblies, and chapels, leadership skills, knowledge, attitudes and values are encouraged and developed.
In the Junior School there are two Year 4 student Junior School Captains, supported by two Vice Captains. We also have House Captains, Captains of Mission and Service, Choir Captains and a String Ensemble Captain. These students take on various roles such as leading sections of assemblies, public speaking at school services, setting up equipment for events and greeting visitors to the school. The Captains also participate in weekly training sessions with the Junior School Chaplain to build their social and leadership skills. Positions are held for one semester.
The Middle School Student Leadership Team consists of the Middle School Captains and Vice Captains, House and Vice House Captains and Class Captains from Years 7 and 8. The opportunities that these leadership positions provide for our students include providing a positive role model for their peers to emulate each day, representing the College at formal College events, participating in a leadership training program and serving the College through developing and implementing Middle School initiatives together. Student leaders are encouraged to view their role as more than wearing a badge and having a title; they will be ambassadors for our College – in their characters, words and actions. They will be actively engaged in College life and enjoy the many rewards that come through serving God and the College community.
In the Senior School there are a range of leadership positions available: College Captain, Senator, House Captain and Class Captain. Each of these roles provide students with the opportunity to develop their leadership skills and to serve the College community. House Captains are required to organise teams for sporting events, run regular house meetings and to build team spirit. Whilst this role does have a specific sporting component, there are also a range of other areas involved in the House Program, including: Theatre Sports, Music, Chess and other cultural activities.
In addition the College has students displaying leadership as AV/Sound Assistance for special events, Chapel Service Set up Teams, Open Day Assistants, Bus Captains and Vice-Captains.
College Captains and Senate Students from Years 10 and 11 are invited to apply to be on the Senate in Term 3. All applicants are interviewed by the Head of Senior School and those selected will hold their position from Term 4 to Term 3 of the following year.
Senators hold a position of great responsibility and will maintain a high profile throughout the school year and work across the three sections of the College. Students from the Senate may apply for the position of College Captain. All applicants are interviewed by the Head of College. College Captains are expected to provide leadership in the Senate and to represent the College at official functions.
