Our Christian Distinction

We value parents taking the time to understand the nature of our College and the trust they place in us as staff to see the best for their children. The College is distinctly Christian in both profession and practice. As a College whose primary purpose is to partner with Christian parents whilst still retaining an open enrolment policy, we enjoy partnership with a wide range of families from diverse backgrounds and beliefs. Families who choose to partner with us in the education of their children understand and are comfortable with our Christian beliefs and practices.

  • All staff and members of the Board are Christians, representative of a wide range of congregations from protestant, catholic and orthodox streams.
  • We seek to have all relationships conducted on the basis of Christian values and practices.
  • Our Christian faith and learning are integrated through every area of the curriculum.
  • Time is devoted each week in assemblies, Chapels and in Christian Studies classes to teach and challenge the students about aspects of the Christian faith, service to others and their relationship with God.
  • Christian Studies programs are run at all levels.
  • There are many opportunities provided for local community service and participation in overseas missions to Cambodia, East Timor and Israel.
  • Foundational Christian thinking is an integral part of staff Professional Development.
  • Four chaplains are employed by the College to work with our students and their families, ensuring close pastoral care, referring to Christian counselling as deeper needs of the community arise.
  • We seek to set a good example in all College related activities and personal behaviour. This extends to having a no-alcohol or gambling policy in the College.
  • We take a conservative stance on moral issues showing care, concern and discernment in dealing with topics that may be sensitive to members of our community. Though we recognise that Christians have many different views on issues of the day, we will not shy away from discussing ‘real-life’ issues with students, but will apply wisdom and recognise the age-appropriate levels for such discussion.


The logo pictured depicts a silhouette of Joshua from the Bible. It was Joshua who led the people of God into the Promised Land. He prepared a new generation for the future and all the promises it held. His outstanding qualities were faith, courage, and devotion to God. In the same way we hope that we at Hillcrest prepare the next generation to be equipped for all the promises life holds for them.  Mr Barry Rodgers, the Founding Principal, developed the original concept for the College logo.


The Motto ‘True and Faithful’, a title ascribed to the Lord Jesus Christ (Revelation 3:14 and 19:11), encapsulates two principles – truth and faith – that guide all thinking, planning, words and actions in the life of the College.


Our guiding Scripture, both a declaration and a prayer, encapsulates our vision, mission and philosophy.
“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever” Ephesians 3:20-21


Hillcrest Christian College has a rich history from its inception in 1981. While the educational opportunities and facilities have been enriched and enhanced, the core Christian values and commitments remain the same.

Hillcrest began in Nyora, later adding the current Berwick site in 1996, known as the Ayr Hill Campus. This new campus began with 98 students and the 138 acre property was ideal for learning and education. In 2003 the Nyora campus was closed down.

In 2005 a new principal was appointed to grow the College and to engage in a new strategic direction which would ensure success for the coming years. Under this new direction the College has grown by 100 students each year.

This growth has been matched by the development of a number of significant facilities including: an Early Learning Centre for 3 & 4 year olds, Discovery Centre (library resource centre), Creative Arts Centre, Performing Arts Theatre, Multipurpose Centre, Science Laboratories, Administration Centre, Food Technology Centre, new classrooms and new playing fields and outdoor spaces for students.

Statement of Faith

The College is a Christian school with a variety of denominations involved. At the College, we ascribe to the following statement of faith: 

Foundational Faith Statements

  • We believe in the divine inspiration, the infallibility and supreme authority of the Old and New Testaments in their entirety and that the Holy Spirit so moved the writers that what they wrote are authoritative statements of truth for all matters of faith and conduct.
  • We believe there is one God in whom there are three equal Divine Persons, revealed as the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit; and who of His own sovereign will created the heavens, the earth and all that is contained within the Universe.
  • We believe the Lord Jesus Christ is the eternally existing, only begotten Son of the Father, conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. As God, He became flesh and dwelt among us; as man He was God.
  • We believe all men are in a fallen, sinful and lost condition through the rebellion of Adam and Eve, who were created without sin, and in this state of depravity are helpless to save themselves and are under the condemnation of God to eternal punishment in Hell.
  • We believe that salvation from the penalty and consequences of sin is found only through the substitutionary, atoning death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ.
  • We believe it is the Holy Spirit alone who convicts men of sin, leads them to repentance, creates faith within them and regenerates and fills those who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as Lord. It is the indwelling Spirit who bestows the Gifts of the Spirit and manifests the Fruit of the Spirit in the believer.
  • We believe Christ died for our sins, was buried and on the third day rose from the dead; that He appeared to men who touched Him and knew His bodily presence and that He ascended to His Father.
  • We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ will return in person with His saints and that the full consummation of the Kingdom of God awaits His return.
  • We believe those who have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit will receive a resurrection body at the return of Jesus Christ and be forever with the Lord, while those who have not believed will be resurrected to stand at the Judgment Seat of God to receive His judgment and eternal condemnation to Hell.
  • We believe in the actual existence of Satan who is the father of all evil and opposed to God although ultimately subject to the purposes of God and destined to be confined forever to Hell.
  • We believe the Church is the Body of Christ composed of all believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, which finds its visible manifestation in the local community of believers and ministers through the co-operative exercise of God-given gifts by the entire membership.

The curriculum at Hillcrest will be based on the following biblical presuppositions, in addition to those clearly articulated in the Foundational Faith Statements:

  • God is the Creator of truth and reason, who gives our students the capacity to explore the Scriptures, to study the wonders of the universe, and to seek understanding of the purpose of our lives. An understanding and appreciation of the ‘big picture’ will give structure, clarity, purpose and coherence to the day to day reality of our lives.
  • God is a God of order and as such His creation can be studied in such a way as to understand the Divine mark on all He has made.
  • God is the author of truth, justice and mercy and is working to redeem His fallen creation. This informs our study of mission, human history and human behaviour.
  • God delights in the goodness of His creation, entrusting us with the role of stewards, to tend and care for His earth, others and self.
  • God is the original creative genius and as we are made in His image, we are able to explore and develop creative gifts and talents.
  • God calls us to love one another and to speak the truth in love. He calls us to lives of integrity and holiness.
